You refuse to leave, but you complain about what you're observing. So you are trapped by your own will.

If there is a director, perhaps their influence is limited. Or perhaps they simply aren't very talented.

The role of an observer is to do precisely that.

I was not observing a performance, but a game. If I knew what happened behind the scenes then there would be no game.

Only to those who cannot leave their boundaries and cross into the sea.

And therein lies the difference. A game relies on the participants to outwit the others; it is inherently different every round. A performance is a constant, there can be little variation.

Unless the end result is fixed, no matter what occurs during the game. Then is it not the same as a play that the audience merely can interact with?

It is not the same at all. A play will always proceed on the same track from beginning to end, with perhaps minor deviations here and there. Your game will start and end at the same place, but the path itself is the interest.
